About Department

Horticulture plays a vital role in agriculture and allied sciences by contributing to food and nutritional security, income generation, and sustainable farming systems. It deals with the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, flowers, plantation, spices, and medicinal and aromatic crops, which are rich sources of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and dietary fibre. Horticultural crops have higher productivity and economic returns per unit area compared to many field crops, making them important for improving farmers’ livelihoods and employment opportunities, especially for small and marginal farmers.

Through teaching, research, and extension activities, the department aims to develop competent graduates capable of working effectively with farming communities, development agencies, and policy institutions. The department actively contributes to sustainable agriculture, livelihood enhancement, climate-smart practices, and inclusive rural development by promoting farmer-centric, knowledge-based, and participatory extension approaches.
